HUEMUL GLACIER
The top recommended hike for those with limited time who still want to explore the Lago del Desierto area. In addition to visiting the Huemul Glacier itself, the trail offers spectacular views of the north face of Mount Fitz Roy.
Important: This trail is located within the Lago del Desierto Provincial Reserve, 37 km from El Chaltén. It can be reached by private vehicle or by arranging a transfer.
The round-trip distance is approximately 4 km (about 2 hours of hiking). An entry fee applies upon arrival.
Once inside, the trail quickly enters a lenga beech forest and begins a well-marked ascent within minutes. As you gain elevation, stunning views of the north face of Cerro Fitz Roy and the Río de las Vueltas valley open up around you.
Upon reaching the destination, settle in at the lakeshore and take in the full splendor of the Huemul Glacier — a sight that makes every step worthwhile. The descent follows the same route.
.
Total distance: 4 km (Back and Forth).
Estimated time: 2:30 – 3 hours.
Although this is a short hike, travel time to Lago del Desierto must be factored in (see transfer options). An early morning start is recommended to make the most of the day.
Before heading out, always check the weather forecast. Depending on the time of year and the type of route, we also recommend verifying sunrise and sunset times.
